In
Memory of
CELIA,
wife of
Garret Constable,
who departed this life
Aug. 23, 1821, in the
66th year of her age.
One of the oldest Constable gravestones in our family has finally been photographed.
Celia Constable of Hurley, New York, was the wife of Garret Constable (b. 1754), a sergeant in the Revolutionary War and the oldest son of William Constable (b. 1726). Her name appears as “Selejte Allen” in the baptismal records at the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church.
Garret and Celia had four children:
- Maria Constable (b. 1784)
- Rachel Constable (b. 1787)
- Sarah A. Constable (b. 1791)
- Richard Oliver Constable (b. 1796)
Despite our family’s nearly 150-year history in Hurley, this is currently the only identifiable Constable gravestone in the Old Burying Ground.
The gravestone will be cleaned in the coming months.
